surfboard transport by bike?

How easy/safe is it to carry a surfboard on a side bike rack to the beach? Does anyone have any experience? I live in Perth, have just moved here and don't have a car. I have been told that the trains/buses will carry a board as long as it is 2m or less. Mine is 2.2m. Are they very strict about the length? It is my first surfboard so i'm dying to start using it!

There is not goin to be a clerk there with a tape measure waiting to measure every surfboard that comes through the train door. Use a bit of common sense, it's only 20 cm
