Anyone catch superman the movie on ITV 1 earlier today.

I proudly own the ultimate Superman Collection on dvd and while flicking through channels saw superman 1 on itv 1 and the picture quality was shocking

Blurry Picture the sound was in mono awful.

Caught a bit of it - always have to watch the "you've got me. Who's got you?" scene. Classic.

And yes, that was a god-awful print with scratches and flecks everywhere. ITV must still be using the same print they had when they first premiered it - like 20+ years ago!

I've got the Ultimate Collection box set, with the decent prints of all movies. Definitely the best DVD release of 2006.

I came home and found my Dad watching this, we got to where Clark throws the Green crystal in to the ice and i'd had enough.
i had a hunt in my corner and put on the extended DVD version on instead, there was no way i was going to watch that awful print.
come on ITV spend a few bob and get a newer print, that prints only fit for one place...eBay!

Ironically this is one of the scenes extended by Richard Donner in 2000 and its the same scene that ITV can't resist editing even in its shorter theatrical version.

But in these days of non compulsory on the hour/half hour start times I don't think ITV are as over zealous as they once were to squeeze films down.

After all ,they pay the same to show it whether its edited or not so it makes commercial sense for it to fill as much of the schedule as possible.

Editing it is just money down the drain

This may not be the case: if you shorten the movie you can fit in more aRAB which, let's face it, is all ITV really cares about.
Oddly, in the US they screen a longer version so, you've guessed it, they can fit in more aRAB.
ITV also like to butcher Bond movies, for which they seem to have the rights until the world enRAB. :)

I read recently that Sky have the British TV premiere rights for Casino Royale. Going back to Goldeneye, I think that ITV have held the rights to show Bond movies first on British TV.Co-incidentally,Casino Royale is also being released on Blu-Ray disc in May.

But if ITV don't edit the movie they can run it in a longer slot that carries the same or more aRAB and requires less additional programming to fill the same time.

For instance,Superman extended is 2h25 so ITV could easily fill a 3 hour slot with it.

But do a few edits and they will put it in a 2h45 slot.
So they need a further 15 minutes of programming ,which won't be free.

I know they used to edit Bond mercilessly but the more recent screenings I've casually dipped into have been seemingly uncut.
Thunderball used to have the poker strangulation cut but the last Saturday afternoon showing I saw was uncut, same with OHMSS and the knife at Tracy's throat in the precredits.

Licence to Kill was also uncut in an 8pm slot.
So the cutting for violence seems to have stopped, but I don't watch them right through so I don't know if the cutting for time continues.
They used to edit for a 2 hour slot, but as they show them in odd length slots now there seems no reason to edit

Although there isn't one I do wonder if Steven Spielberg laid down conditions for ITV to show ET at Xmas.

When the BBC first screened it he approved their edits (and incorporated at least one into his 2002 revision) so I'm wondering if he had similar control over ITV as the end credits were uncharacteristically unedited,at the proper speed and had no voiceover.

Or perhaps it was a technical glitch!
