Laurens Fridael, BRILLIANT author of Sunrise 0.41 (successor to JPluck, which I used and loved), had some good advice for me and I thought I'd pass it along to all of you (emailed him to say I was giving him credit, since this is a reproduction of his email).
I have Java JRE (runtime environment) 1.4.1.07 - and didn't want to go to the newer one (1.4.2."04" or something) because it took up another 60MB. Java test page said all was fine (I'll add that link later so you guys can check yours).
I went on the Java forum and no one could answer why 1.4.2 was better, so I left it alone - reinstalled 1.4.1.07. I've been "away" from this forum because over the last 2 weeks I did something a little drastic in light of getting Firefox 1.0: I uninstalled Internet Explorer (6 and the imbedded 4.0!), Java Virtual Machine, Outlook Express, Outlook, address book, handicapped accessories, NET Meeting, games and some other crap including 100MB of security upgrades for Win2k/I.E. (100 MB alone).
I saved 390MB, and rely on Firefox now completely. I can't have a security leak if there's nothing to leak. It's as "linux" as Windoze can be.
Anyway, now I've framed the thing, back on point: I want Sunrise and it's almost done - 0.41 is "final," but Laurens is a perfectionist and I'm sure will add little improvements. Here's the all important email he sent me, complete with a link to an interesting article discussing JAVA SECURITY LEAK (no one ever thought thre could be such a thing):
----------------------------
I'm not sure if Sunrise will work with 1.4.1. I don't have it installed
so I can't say. At any rate, I strongly recommend using the latest 1.4.2
release, as earlier versions have a serious security hole.

-----------------------------
That article convinced me to spend the additional memory and move up to 1.4.2, and some of you might think about doing same. With a firewall, antispy/virus/adware, and Firefox + SpyBot, I'm not too worried - but if a java applet can be "reprogrammed," and 1.4.2 can stop this, then I'm all for it. Ends up taking additional 30MB by the way, not 60MB as I first thought, and according to some it runs several times faster.
Sunrise should be a fantastic webpage viewer, better than TealAgent and Silo combined . . . and freeware. Still works with "Plucker," by the way.
Laurens Fridael is a TERRIFIC guy and we should all support him on here!!
