summer visitation - looking for others opinions?

My BF has an ex wife and 2 small children. She moved out of state so he rarely gets to see them. He will be deploying near the end of this year. The divorce agreements says that at a minimum he gets them for half of each summer.

My BF, knowing that he is deploying and wont get to see them for a year asked his ex wife if he could possibly have them the whole summer this year since clearly she will have them the whole summer next year, and all the other times he would normally get to see them, she will have them since he will be deployed.

Do you think this is a reasonable request??? and would you say yes to it? and if not why?

I thought it was good idea, but apparently she didnt. she told him no, that they are her children and its his problem that he is deploying and wont get to see them and that the divorce decree says he can have them half of the summer so that means she gets them the other half so she is getting them her half of the summer.... no matter whether she has them the ENTIRE rest of the year or not...
Starfish.. i think you missed the point.
the point is that he is deploying.. meaning going to Afghanistan for a WHOLE year. so a compromise would not work. he wont be here to take part in it.

and he does get spring break time, and Christmas time, etc. but the point is that he wont be "using" it because he will be in another country for a year.
DM - please tell me how he could go closer to them during this year? or even the month in question?
clearly he has a job that requires him to be located in a specific state... im not sure how you can get closer, so please enlighten me if possible.
