Suggested plant for selective breeding experiment?

I have a friend who would like to conduct a a very basic genetic experiment. He would like to see if he can bring out certain traits in a plant through selective breeding (like leaf span, flower size, and colour). He is looking for a species with the following characteristics:

- flowers as quickly as possible after germination
- has a short lifespan and germination period
- shows much genetic variation within the species

Any suggestions? What would be the textbook example to work with?
