I'm looking to do some things with my girlfriend in the city that won't break the bank. I don't currently have a job (I'm 18), my store went out of business, and I'm trying to find things we can do that won't cost me a lot. For the Museum of Natural History (NYC), it says "suggested admission" is like $15. Do this mean I can pay anything I want? Even only like $1 for each of us? Thanks
Also, as a side note, if you can do this, what's the kind and courteous way to tell the cashier you would only like to pay $1 for each person.

Under your circumstances, giving $1 per person seems quite reasonable. Just hand the $2 to the cashier and say "Two please". That's all there is to it. It is very doubtful that the cashier will say anything. In the VERY unlikely situation where the cashier points to the suggested $15, simply say: "Yes, I know, but this is all I am able to pay today".

Technically, you could hand the cashier 2-cents and say "Two, please," and they'll let you in, and, don't be shy about it, since most folks don't know that those admission prices are only "suggested," the Museum makes a bundle every day off of the tourists.

Of course, all of NY City's museums and such attractions, like Lincoln Center, are all in financial trouble right now, but I'm sure they'll be just fine with your 2-cents worth. ;-)
