I am looking for a colourful shoaling fish to add to my tropical tank (4 ft, 300 litres). At the moment I have a fire eel, clown loaches, black ghost knife fish, khuli eels and a plec. They're mainly nocturnal fish, so I'm now looking for something to add some life during the daytimes.

Who here has kept rosy barbs and are they fun to watch? I've only seen them packed in stock tanks in shops where they can be restricted. I was put off by their rather common goldfish appearance and the fact that they don't like warm water (my tank is normally 79'F), so I hope what I've seen in the shops does not do them justice. To add to the confusion, I heard there are different types of rosy barbs, the most coourful one being the neon rosy barb. Are the neon rosies that much more colourful than the normal ones, or are the normal ones colourful enough? Also, will including females in the shoal encourage the males to bright up their colours or will the males still be bright even if I don't include females?

Or, are there any other colourful shoaling fish I can add to my current collection? I like neons but they'll get eaten by my BGK and fire eel.

Any suggestions/advice, I would be most grateful.

Thanks.
