Suddenly become sensitive...

Hi all, am new to the site so please bear with me!

Just wondering if anyone could shed a little light on this problem I've developed recently.

Most people hate the sound of fingernails down a blackboard, as I always have and it causes me to retch when I hear it. Also the hairs on my arms stand up and I get goosebumps and feel a bit sick.

Recently this has become applicable to many noises and sensations, such as a nail scraping emulsion paint, thick cotton against my teeth (this was accidental!) and nails against my teeth.

I was wondering if this had a name and if there was anything I could do to counteract it, as it is now happening around 20 times a day and at work too if I touch something by accident I immediately retch! People must think I'm odd.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance. x:confused:

lildunny: It could be SPD. Sensory Perception Disorder. People that have it can't stand tags on clothing, being touched by people, going into malls, are bothered by perfume and scents, and more. Look it up for more info.

Thanks for your help, this seems to relate more to pain when touching things rather than nausea so not sure if it is that! Just very confusing as it has sprung from nowhere and is really affecting my day to day life!!

I agree with 92261 - sounds like sensory sensitivity - also sometimes called sensory integration disorder or sensory defensiveness.

My son has this issue, and has a "sensory diet" planned by an Occupational Therapist. The idea is, he gets certain types of sensory input at regular intervals through the day to make him more tolerant of bothersome sensory input. (For example, he absolutely can't stand the sensation of a pencil "dragging" on paper - a tough problem for an elementary school student!) One of the things that has been very effective for him is brushing. It sounds crazy, but really works.

In our experience, you may need to try several strategies to find what works for you. We haven't found a single "magic bullet" for our son, but a combination of strategies help him navigate his world successfully, and in relative comfort.

Good luck!

Thank you limping. Cannot find out what has caused this as for 21 years of my life I have been fine and it's just been happening for the last few months! Very strange.
