Haters come see me?

So I go running 3 miles every sunday, and today while I was running, on the third mile I started to get a sudden sharp pain in my left ankle. Since I was so close to my house I continued running, but it started hurting even more. What is this? I was running on a sidewalk, with proper running shoes. At some points I was going uphill and dwonhill. But as soon as i stopped, it was fine. How can I make sure this doesn't happen next time I run?
