(I am a 29 year old woman, vegetarian, no prior history of acid reflux)

A week and a half ago I suddenly began choking on all my food, after visiting my doctor and GI I was told this is a result of Acid Reflux. I have never had any prior acid reflux symptoms. I did a barium swallow that revealed a small hiatal hernia. I also had an endoscopy that revealed a normal esophagus but the biopsy indicated no allergies but from this they determined I was having acid reflux. They have me on a 40 mg dose of Prilosec, I've been on it for 2 days. I still can't swallow very well. I can only get down fluiRAB in limited amounts. Its been a week and a half since I've a real meal, I feel exhausted and can't wait for the prilosec to really kick in and start making a difference.

Has anyone else had this experience? how long did it take for the prilosec to make a difference?

I'd love to know if anyone else has had any experiences similar to this.

Thats strange, I think you should have further testing done, as far as the prilosec goes Id say you would get the full benefits after 1 week, Maybe even quicker but the standard is about 1 week. I have not experienced this, but dont give up, and dont let the doctors boot you out the door, have them do further testing and even make appointments to specialists yourself if need be. Ill pray that you have resoulution of your symptoms.

Thanks for the reply!

Hoping the prilosec starts kicking in quick. I've been working very hard on staying hydrated.

I still have to go in for a motility test... where they test if my esophagus is spasming or not. These tests are all terribly unfun!

Hang in there! This is a tricky thing to deal with. I have it off and on for a few years now. Its soooo frustrating. Its scary at first. When I had my first round of it I thought I had asthma. I had a thick mucusy throat and felt like I couldnt' get a normal breath. It frightened me. It took a good week or two on the meRAB. And I would say stay on it at least a month or two. Some people are on it permanently. I am on it a few months out of the year. Mainly during my heavy allergy seasons, like right now. All the drainage kicks up my reflux. The suffering is miserable. I hate taking meRAB and I can tell when I skip. Just get a full check up and make a plan with your doctor. You will be fine! So many of us deal with this daily. All the best to you!

Thank you for letting me know, it has been very scary, I had that breathing thing too. I went to the emergency room for it and they told me it was just a panic attack! good thing I didn't pay attention and went to see my doctor anyways.

Because I haven't had any other symptoms its hard to know if its improving.

Thanks for the worRAB of support though. :)

Well, the esophageal motility test didn't happen... they couldn't get the tube down my nose and I freaked out. Still on the prilosec. Sick of smoothies, super hungry.
