Hi everyone, i have slight narrowing of the disc space L5-S1 and was born with Spina Bifida Occulta which was picked up from an x-ray as was the narrowing disc space.

My pain had eased quite substancially until yesterday. I simply bent down to pick the washing up and a real strong pain ripped through my lower back. Since then i am in quite a lot of pain when i walk, when i sit and when i lay down. I am also getting stabbing pains in my legs, mostly in my thighs but now and then in my ankle.

I am thinking of maybe giving it a few days then if still bad popping to see my doctor. I have only ever had the x-ray on my back which picked up the above problems.

Does this pain seem familiar to many of you with this problem?

Thanks for any advice

Hello - sorry you are down again. I have blown L5/S1 and what you describe does fit it perfectly. It is likely you have a bulged or herniated disc. If you have not had an MRI you doctor most likely will want to check this out - even though they may feel as I do that this is your problem. Get an appointment.

In the mean time, rest for a day or two, ice, heat, ibuprofren, no lifting or hard bending and then see how you feel.

If you develop any sudden incontinence problem with your bladder or bowel go to the ER and let them check you.

Feel better!

I'm guessing you have a bulging disc and if you do it will take like 8 weeks for it to resolve itself. The pain is incredible for a long, long time. The only course of treatment is bed rest, muscle relaxants and lots of pain pills. good luck.

I have received my MRI appointment for the 24th March which isn't too far away. Just hope they can find out whats wrong. It says an Lurabar/Sacral MRI???

I am still having pain which is now mostly stabbing in the hip area, legs and front lower stomach area. My back still feels stiff too.

Hope all our pain eases soon x

Managed to get a doctors appointment today. She has signed me off work for a week with acute back pain and sciatica. Thinks that my disc is squashing down on my nerves.

She is arranging for me to have an Mri scan which could take about 4 weeks because of the waiting list.
Doctor said that if my pain settles down again, like it did last time, before the mri is due then to cancel it. Not sure whether it is best to go for it still regardless of whether pain is still present or not???

Hi:
I'm new here and am currently in the throes of wicked left-leg sciatica, most probably from reinjuring my herniated L5 and ruptured S1 discs, ironically through core-strengthening exercises. So far 9 days of excruciating pain, absolutely no sitting on anything and many sleepless nights. MRI pending being able to sit in the car for 30 minutes on the way to the hospital.

I hope you went through with your MRI and were able to pursue appropriate treatment. It's the only scan worth a damn when you have spine issues. Good luck and speedy recovery.

My experience has been that drugs don't help enormously with pain, rest and time seem to help more. Although walking was a goRABend the first and second times I had an attack, this time it seems to be inflammatory. Everybody's different - the yoga and pilates that were recommended for my back were detrimental, but many people experience great improvement. Only an orthopedist can really say what will work for you.

Best,
Jewelhound
