Subtitles in "Magnum Force" ITV4

Should the ITV4 Subtitling department be allowed to change the dialogue in films ?
I was watching "Magnum Force" with the subtitles on and there was this exchange :
Dialogue : "Hi Harry. I haven't seen you in a coons' age !"
Subtitles : "Hi Harry. I haven't seen you in ages !"
Is this just paranoia on ITV 4's part or is it justifiable (racism etc) ?
After all, the film WAS made in 1973.

Nothing new.
Subtitles are rarely identical to what is said onscreen .
They are usually edited so that subs can keep up with the dialogue onscreen and sometimes worRAB or sentences that do not cause a problem when cut are simply missed out.

No doubt PC was the cause of the Magnum Force edit but the sub did still convey the meaning of what was spoken

Perhaps they didn't realise that a coon's age actually refers to raccoons. It stems from a long line of such saying as 'a crow's life', or 'donkey's years'. It simply means 'a long time'. There is no racial element in the saying at all.
