Substituting vanilla beans for vanilla extract? How much to use?

I managed to pick up some vanilla bean pods at the farmers market that were not too expensive. I was thinking of using them instead of vanilla extract in the following recipe. How much of the pod should i use? I will be making 2 and a half times the amount specified in the recipe as i am having 15 people over.
