A contract also gurantees a fixed price for the lenght of the contract... Be aware taught that as soon as you downgrade anything you loose anty price guarantee due to contract

Express Vu never agreed, in the hole time I was there, to reconise their mistake and waive off early termination fee. Prooving and getting Bell to agree that you good bad service, equipement or programming is gonna be a long , paperwork process that might give you very less or no result

I bought 3 6164 and a 9242 from my local dealer.
He does not do the activations in store, he says he has too many other things to do all day besides "policing" for bell.

Any way I paid full retail price, came home hooked them up. I told the CSR I wanted them activated with no contract. He also gave me the credits I was supposed to receive with a contract. But was later told by another rep that was a mistake, but still let me keep the credits.

I do agree with you that they are "rarely" a problem although I can quote several examples where they ARE a problem, take for example an apartment building that was "Bulk". Meaning that every suite had Bell ExpressVu installed as part of the Lease they signed when renting.

This building had enjoyed service with Bell for a few years and then one day they lost signal. the Tech went to the equipment inside the building and found no incomming signals. He proceeded to the roof where he found that directly in th eline of sight a new floor was being added to an adjacent apartment building.....Yes it is an extreme case but it does happen.

I have seen self installs, at ground level, then the Customer is furious when a new house is built nextdoor and they loose signal, demanding that Bell relocate his dish for free....

As for Tree's, well they do tend to get higher every year around where I live, so it might not be a problem during installation, but several years later it most certainly can be a major problem.

I will be removing 3 very large Poplars soon, as they are getting close to obstructing my signals. If I look South all around to the West I have nothing but Trees, so for me it means being prepared to deal with the situation, when it becomes a problem, which is getting close..

I have examples where a "Move" customer has offered to 'pay' the Technician to say there is "No Line Of Sight" just so he can get out of a contract, should he do that. Remember if the Tech comes to your house and does no work he gets $0.

Even when you die, closing that account is not as simple as you think, just as Ex Agent, she has dealt with that problem I am sure.

There are many way to get out of the contract but the best way if you are that concerned is to use a provider who requires NO contract in the first place.

They have contracts to manage their subsidies on their hardware. Think about the cost of the hardware, costs of acquiring, maketing, promo's etc. to let the customer buy the equipment and walk or use it for "free'er things".

I however do think, they should consider non contract prices - i.e. $800 or $900 HD 9242's - no contract. Similar to Rogers / Bell's World BB at $699 no contract...

I closed ann account at the beggening of the year for a friend and I was surprised how easy it was...

My, at the time boyfriend, had moved into an appartement where they don't allow dish to be installed. He called to close the account but the agent told him there would be a huge penalty and since he was hesitant he didn't proceed. He called when I was at his home and requested that they terminate service (of course 30 days policy applied) and when they agent tried to "scare him" to keep his contract talking about huge early termination fee he told her his lease states that he can not have the dish installed. He took her name an agent number and faxed a copy of the lease to Express Vu. When he received his next bill there was no termination fee on it

When a person die all they have to do in order to close the account is to send the death certicate. Ideally, they should at the same time add a note saying that the autorise tranfer of the receivers if someone call, that they will give them to Mr X or sell them at a garage sale. Unfortunatly the famillies often forget's to do that... The close the account, often forget to write a note. A few month later the familly of the person who died does a garage sale and sale the Bell TV receiver. The new buyer calls and unfortunatly there is no note on the account that autorise the tranfer of the receiver. The person is upset, but unfortunatly there is nothing the agent could do, they have to follow the procedure

I still wonder why it is so hard (i.e. un-natural) to activate service without a lengthy contract with this provider. It was not like this many years ago, where there were no contracts back then. Now with all the "explanations" given by some of you, I guess it's all for "our own good" (being sarcastic here).

I'm still shaking my head regarding the "hopping around" allegory.

Did he also give you all the Hardware to supply ALL the receivers with Nimiq 1 & 2 signals.? ie; 2 x SW44's etc.....

Thats 5 Tuners, so I am curious as to what switch's you got.?

If you buy used equipment, yes.
I think (don't quote me) that you can buy new equipment, with no contract, but you will have to pay for installation, which can easily exceed $100...

No it does not. Bell contracts are written so that they can change the terms anytime they like.

yeah, he was pretty good
Gave me everyhting I needed, he had a back room full of parts
told me to take what I needed.

Meaning I have to have a 3rd party satellite installer install the satellite, then buy a used expressvu reciver from a buddy or local classifieds??

It's no different than cell phone providers. They want to ensure that you will stay with them for a length of time to recover the cost of the equipment they are providing.

When you get "free installation" and discounts on new equipment, they want to ensure that you will stay in the revenue stream for a period of time so that they can re-coup these costs. If you bought a receiver for $50 and received free installation and were not tied to a contract and decided to leave after two months, they would have lost money on you. If they know that you will be with them for a two year period, these costs can be averaged out over 24 months and not have a big impact on them.

I personally do not like it, but I understand why they do it.

Promo pricing is usually tied to a contract as well, so the bell 50% off deal wouldn't apply either.

You can go to Costco buy any Bell receiver and then call and activate your receiver with no contract.

Okay,
Say If I already have a dish pointed to bells satellite.
Then i buy a expressvu 2700 reciver from craigslist. activate it throw in the new smart card, suscribe to expresvu for 1-2 months just beacuse i dont like the programing aviable? Is this possible
Let me know
Thanks

The contract does not mean price freeze .It refers to lenght of time customer is willing to stay with Bell. For signing the contract customer gets some kind of a discount on a new receiver or programming. I just got a letter from bell with an offer of 25% discount on new HD receiver if I sign a contract ,but I would rather pay full price and stay away from any contracts.

I would say yes, no problem.

Although you may or may not need a new smart card.

Just ensure the previous owner calls Bell to tell them he has sold the receiver.

There would still be a 30 day cancellation period I believe.

Resurrecting this thread as I am interested in signing up for Bell but reading through the posts I am still a bit confused. Part way through it seems the discussion veered off into another direction.

If someone can clarify for me the policy RE: Contracts as I, like the original poster, would like to pay month to month and not have to be locked into some stupid contract. If I go to Best Buy or Future Shop and buy a Bell receiver, come home and activate it then they will allow me to sign up without a contract- is this correct?! If I understood things correctly then that means I will be responsible for installation charges? Also, do I have to have a Bell dish as there is already a dish on the roof where I live?

Can someone explain the logic behind this policy about forcing customers to sign contracts? If I am not mistaken at one point Star Choice did this very thing but they have since done away with contracts and now allow you to pay on a month to month basis. Does this have to do with Bell's piracy problem and if yes then how is it my problem that Bell's system is not secure?

Thanks.
