Subpoena to attend court 7 hours away... how can I get full compensation?

I witnessed an accident last December on a major interstate, in which a guy ran off the road into the woods because apparently he was drunk. There were no victims or destruction of property. I stopped to see if he was ok, and other people stopped as well and stayed until the cops arrived. Now I received a subpoena to attend court but it is 7 hours away from my house. I've spoken to the Assistant State Attorney and he said there is no other way, although I am going to have a lot of expense and miss at least 2 days at work. My wife needs the car for work, so how can I go there? It would seem plausible if they could arrange for a deposition locally. I know it's a subpoena (meaning I cannot miss it). I am just trying to find an easier way so that it won't be so burdensome to my family. Will I be entitled to FULL compensation (gas, hotel, meals, time off work, etc)? Thanks.
I live in Florida. How do I find out the maximum distance?
When I spoke to him, he said "well there is no other way out"... that's what he said. Really, didn't help much.
