I am currently taking 6 milligrams of suboxone a day and have been for 3 months. I have recently injured my foot (in the last 2 days) and am in awful pain I can't afford to take any time off work. My question is since my script ran out 2 days ago what are my options. I have to be able to work.

Your best option would be to see a doctor and have it examined. Did you strain a muscle? Did you break a bone possibly? Do you have another script for Suboxone?

I doubt the Suboxone is going to treat this acute pain. It does not treat pain very well to begin with and for acute pain it works even less. I would try taking OTC medications first. The best one would be ibuprofen(Advil) especially if there is any type of inflammation. You can take up to 800mg at a time 3 or 4 times per day if your stomach can handle it. The max dosage is usually 2400 - 2800mg/day. You could also take Tylenol (acetaminophen) along with this. You could alternate say take 800mg ibuprofen, 4 hours later take 1000mg Tylenol, 4 hours later 800mg ibuprofen, etc.

If the OTC meRAB don't work then you might have to take a narcotic type pain reliever. If so make sure you have someone hold on to them and only give you the allowed dosage. Keep in mind that Ultram(tramadol) is a narcotic medication even though it is not a scheduled medication yet.

Hi, fishgrappler! I'd have to second Brian's suggestion about having your foot seen to so you can see what kind of injury you're dealing with, as that might affect the treatment, both for your acute pain and your long-term healing. As, if there's a broken bone and you can get it immobilized, or treat with heat/cold if it's a tissue damage injury. That itself might help with some of the pain, if that makes any sense.

I'm on suboxone, also, and if I was in your situation, I'd call my sub doc and explain it to him/her, as I'm a little leery of taking strong pain relievers and sub at the same time, or within short times of each other. I'm a chronic pain patient, and I also don't find sub a good pain reliever for eithe my chronic pain or any kind of acute pain. I'm with Brian that the OTC's would be the way to go if you're going to self-treat, especially the NSAIRAB and/or anti-inflammatories.

I also would agree that if you did get put on a strong pain med, to have someone you trust hold them for you while you're under treatment (at least that's what I'd do in my case).

Good luck and I hope you're feeling better soon,

rose
