I just made my reservations for Sturgis next summer.. Just curious if any of you Ducatisti are planning on heading to the rally? Maybe we could organize a ride and have a nice Ducati motorcycle presence at the rally. That would be great. Let me know and we can figure something out.

when exactly is it? b/c I was planning on riding up to Laguna for the GP race too. Even though that will be one hell of a ride for me, about 10hrs on a bike ugh. lol

Hey Rowdy

Andy here from San Diego.
Sturgis is the largest motorcycle rally in the world, mainly Harleys and Choppers.
I rode there and back in 06 and did 5200 miles in 11 days.
The ride there and back were probably better than actually being in Sturgis.
The rides and roads in and around Sturgis are really fantastic , but the place is so heavily policed it's silly. A cop on every corner and behind every bush.

I did Laguna in 08 and rode up on my Sport 1000 S from San Diego.
I left really early and ended up having Highway 1 from SLO almost into Monterey all by myself.
No cops , just beautiful scenery , roads and the roar of my red rocket to keep me company.
I met Cook Nielsen , Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner , had a blast got home in four days and was out of this world.

So I will be doing it this year again , probably on my 848.

I wont be going to that Biker want to be bad ass convention. I want in the 80s as a young man. I said then I would never go a back for bike week again.
Black Hills in August, 250,000 bikers in black leather and 105 deg. NOT PLESENT! If your lucky, a thunder shower will come through in the evening and wash some of the B.O. away.

2006 Pro Hill-climb returned to the rally, so I was back. Reaffirmed every thing I hate about want to bees. All wanting to be diff. Buck the sys. Put it to the man. What ever. So they all put on there black uniform, mount the same "implement" bike, and hit the road in there motor-homes. Fuck that.

That said: Any one on there way to or from want a place to rest and stay the night. We are about 240 miles from Sturgis, on the way to the NW.
Any one from out of the US want to rent a bike in Billings, Bear Tooth Harley, call them now, PM me, I will ride with you. Not to Sturgis. We could go to the AMA flat track warm up in Billings.

any ways, have fun.

I've done it three times. Many moons ago when it was probably 70% hard core bikers was the first jaunt out there. As many were carrying guns I left pretty quickly. Today you could almost call it a family event.

As you have reservations all should be well. The town of Sturgis is no big deal yet overwhelmed with x hundred thousand bikers. You WILL do the main drag in Sturgis for a day and a night just to be part of the MC camaraderie. It's pretty impressive. Yes I actually rode a bike to a trailer event.

The surrounding area within say 100 miles of the town is pretty neat. A must see is Spearfish canyon. A very scenic route to a couple smaller towns. Lead and Deadwood are nice stops and in Deadwood you can hit the casinos. Yes there are bars along Spearfish canyons with free beer.

The most important thing about the event is that you must be on your toes as a high percentage of people are drunk and riding Hardleys that have no brakes and at 10 am. Typically 6-8 people are killed there every year. If you want wild like in really wild parties you'll have to hit the campsites. Relatively large names in music are booked at the sites and some crazy stuff goes on there.

Take a day trip and bop into Wyoming to see DevilsTower. Ride I 90 at 120 mph as most of the cops are hired on to police the event. Get a group together and do the Badlands. Weather seems to be either one or two extremes. 85-105 degrees and sunburn/dehydration or 50 degrees and rain. Pack clothing accordingly. I do and often use it all.

It's one of those things in life that you have to do. Although 90% Harley you can't help but think 'wow, 200,000 - 300,000 people and this thing is all about bikes'. If you don’t have a camera stay home.

i am planning on riding down to california for moto gp....sturgis would be really cool but i have been waiting to buy my motorcycle and to ride down with my best friend and his dad and there friends for this...i have to go.

Just wondering if anybody had changed their minds and will be heading to Sturgis? Love to get a Ducati specific ride together for an afternoon in the Black Hills..

I am going this year, we usually go every other year, we have friends that live in that area, we are riding out from illinois, 2 up, my wife is going so we are taking the electra glide, much more comfy for the 900 mile each way trip than my sport 1000 would be. but next year i could take a trailer and bring some fun bikes.
