Stuck on a math riddle...?

Hi you guys. Hey I'm stuck on a math riddle, and have tried everything to figure it out! Let me know if any of you can figure out what I can't:

Three people are to share a pile of money in the proportions of 1/2, 1/3, and 1/6. Instead, each person simply takes some money from the pile until there is none left. Then the first person (respectively -- person #1 entitled to 1/2, etc) returns one-half of what he took, the second returns one-third of what she took, and the third returns one-sixth of what he took. When the returned amount is divided equally among the three people, it is found that they each have what they are entitled to.

...The challenge for us is to determine how much money was in the original pile and how much each person initially took from the original pile. I tried plugging the data in and setting up an equation(s), but I found myself mixed up in too many variables for me to comfortably solve. I tried guess and check, but did not get much of anywhere and could not pick up on a pattern. So I need help!! Can anyone figure out how to solve this problem?!
