Struggling With My Yamaha RX-463 Reciever?

I have a system composed of a Yamaha RX-463 reciever, 32'' LCD TV, Xbox360, and a cable box set up. I have HDMI cables set up from my xbox to the reciever, and from the reciever to the TV. I can't seem to get surround sound of my xbox (I did change the xbox setting to 5.1 system). For some reason I'm still only getting stereo. I have a feeling I'm not on the right setting or something, but I have changed them around and still cannot get it to work out all 5 speakers.

Anyone have a solution for me?

And also any idea how to get an ipod to just play through all five speakers?

Make sure on the Xbox you set it to output bitstream over HDMI.

Then put a movie you know has 5.1 sound.
On the movie menu, select Dolby Digital 5.1 playback

You should hear 5.1 sound (wherever available).

Ipods output stereo; however, most amps have special DSP modes to create virtual surround from 2-ch stereo (like Dolby prologic II) ; check your manual.
