The previous discussion thread was pre-emptively deleted because a mod claimed the original post "didn't have enough substance" (possible case of moderator bias"). But I really think there should be a discussion thread for this show as it airs, so here it goes.

Although it's retained most of the original directorial staff, Strike Witches 2 has an undeniably different feel from the first season. From a magazine interview:
Although S2 hasn't had anything as grim as S1's "I've lost everything dear to me" Episode 4 so far, it still has plenty of action and military fanservice. The constant neuroi attacks are actually starting to feel very "monster of the week." Despite it's military trappings, Strike Witches has a narrative structure similar to classical magical girl anime:
1. There's some sort of emotional problem among the characters.
2. Monster attacks.
3. The emotional problem is somehow resolved through the defeat of the monster.
The most recently aired Episode 6 ("Higher Than the Sky") exemplifies this. It's also blown away all my previous worries about worse writing and attacks on suspension-of-disbelief (katanas cutting lasers? Actually riding on brooms?). It even uses the dimensions of the monster battle as a metaphor for the emotional conflict. From one perspective, Strike Witches 2 isn't just a "lighter" take on the 1st season, but a condensation of what the show was always about: the character's relationships and bonds.

Q: What kind of story will season two have?
A: It will have a greater number of cheerful episodes than the first season. The setting of the Adriatic sea, and its endlessly brilliant sky and warm climate had an influence perhaps. Also, in the broadcast, it's a time when everyone has been set free. (Takamura)
