Strep throat treatment... already too late?

I took my daughter to the doctor 10 days ago with a sore throat. Doc didn't think it was serious but did a swab anyway. Today I got a call advising me the swab was positive for Group a strep and that this needs to be treated with antibiotics. I Did a little research and it seems that strep will go on it's own within 3 to 7 days so I think giving drugs is pointless at this stage, doc does not agree. My daughter is no longer complaining of a sore throat and does not present any symptoms. I have lost confidence in doc as diagnosis took such a long time. Can anyone tell me if I should still give antibiotics to be on the safe side? I thought these days you were supposed to try and avoid them if poss...?

Well, it was probably a lab the culture was out-sourced to and not the doc that took so long. Precious few do their own these days. And since strep can have some long term side effects, I think I'd do a short course to just be on the safe side.

If the doctor thinks your daughter needs the antibiotic, I'd give them to her. You are right that antibiotics are over-prescribed and it's created problems, but that's because many doctors give antibiotics for viral infections, which is pointless. Strep is bacterial and antibiotics ARE indicated for bacterial infections. Strep sometimes has a 'dormant' period after several days, but it usually comes back with a vengence without treatment.
