One week ago I noticed a firm bump on my inside cheek. When I looked later it looked like a pimple but was surrounded by a white/grey patch. The following day the bump had softened and was not firm. It is still there......one week today and the white/grey patch is also there. It almost feels like a skin tag that I can wiggle with my tongue. It is around the area of my chew line and near the duct. Went to dentist today and he is sending me for a biopsy. I am a smoker so I am scared to death. He said it was unlikely that it was oral cancer but then said he thought the white patch is very traditional looking of cancer. Can anyone give me more help. The bump is not circular and is very small and I can move it with my tongue. Should I be really worried????

I would be worried regardless if I smoked or not. If your dentist is concerned, you should be too.

I hope it's not cancer or anything serious, but with this one scare, you should take the opportunity to take determined steps to quit.

If it's not cancer, try not to take it as a free ticket to relief, for if you already have changes in cellular levels such as what you have, continued smoking can encourage all sorts of other stuff.

It's OK now, but down the road....life only gets better and it sucks to have to deal with anything one could have helped prevent in the past.

I have a friend who used Zyban (prescription) to help her quit...and she was a hardcore smoker.

Please let us know the results of your biopsy.

Thank you so much for the advice but I had already intended to quit based on this scare. What I was looking for was information to give me insight as to whether or not this sounded like a common situation that is cancerous. My dentist stated that he thought it was unlikely that it was cancer but then stated that the white patch around this looked like traditional cancer.......I do have a biopsy and am afraid. Is there something else this could be?? And another thing, would the sore be diminishing in size if it was cancerous?? It was really firm the Friday night I noticed it but it went down a little the following day. Also, the bump (and it is not round or hard but rather long and skinny) can be moved around with my tongue.....is that suspicious of cancer?
:)

It's great you're going to quit. I misread that the dentist wasn't initially concerned that it's cancer, but it's good he didn't pass it off because of the colouring. Better being safe in checking early.

It could possibly be a bump from your tootrabroadrush or something that you ate? I have no idea what it could be...I do get bumps on occasion in my mouth, but nothing really that doesn't heal eventually. I always to have a line where my teeth are and I notice I'm constantly running my tongue through my mouth and sucking my cheeks. I do, however, have a lumpish thing on my uvula that goes up and down...I'll check that out now that you've mentioned what you have.

I looked at some mouth cancer pics...scary stuff, but it seems most of the pics are advanced, which adRAB to the impact of OMG!!!

Please let me know the results of the biopsies.....all you can do is wait. I can relate to that aspect of health issues.

Hang tough....worrying won't change the outcome. But it's the same thing that I would do probably to the point of flaring (ulcerative colitis). The fact that it has improved is positive in my mind. There are so many glanRAB and sensitive area that could get blocked or scratched and inflamed, and we fight of so much stuff continually.
