Story writing: What crime did he commit?

A guy is in his apartment. At 5 am, the police furiously knocks on his door. The whole block is surrounded. The police asks him to surrender, he doesn't want to give them the satisfaction of killing him. They say they'll break open if he doesn't open up by the count of three. After 3, they open up and see the guy lying in his blood with a gun in his hand.

What crime did he commit, so bad that he had to kill himself and have the block surrounded? I can't think of anything original.
