Stimulating environment or stressful for a betta?

i suggest drift wood with notches, and then attache java moss to the notches. let it grow around, trim it maybe once every 2-3 months. (depends on growth) choose interesting fish that will look cool like neon tetras. classics that are always pretty. ALWAYS have some kind of catfish/pleco/loach. try to get 2-3 hillstream loaches.

I find that the easiest and healthiest way to keep a betta is in a regular tank. Those crappy little bowls aren't going to cut it. The reason they put them in there is because it's cheap, "cute", cheap, and bettas are air breathers and can survive in that type of environment if it isn't too nasty. They have the ability to breath like other fish, but they can also breath air at the surface like people if the air quantity in the water is too low. They shouldn't have to do this though. Male bettas only fight with other male bettas. They are actually pretty wimpy with other fish. You can get a bigger tank and put them in with those fish. Just make sure they are all docile fish so that they don't chew the bettas fins off. You shouldn't put one in anything smaller than a 5 gallon tank. Add gravel and plants and such. Put taller thicker plants in back and get them shorter and thinner as you get to the front. You should also slope your gravel from high in the back to low in the front. This gives the fish a place to hide when it feels threatened, but incourages it to come to the front otherwise. The most interesting thing I think you can add for a betta is either another fish of a different species or a filter. I had a betta in a 5 gallon hex and it'd spend all day swimming into the return from the filter and fighting the current. They are supposed to like still water, but mine loved the current.
