As some of you know, I've had a really hard time finding asthma medicines that do more good than harm. Thus far, I've used Corabivent and Proventil.
Corabivent eased the tightness in my chest, but caused a weird painful "burned" feeling in the center of my chest. If I used it too many times in one day, (like 4) I'd get to a point where it literally hurt to breathe. (Man was that a bad night!) Sometimes when I used the Corabivent I'd have another spasm an hour or so later.
I eventually figured out Corabivent was Very Bad For Me and got Proventil instead. For a few weeks, I used it whenever I needed (which was kind of a lot, because it was peak pollen) and life was good.
Lately, though, I've started having bad side effects from the Proventil, too. First it was acid reflux and nausea. Dealt with that by avoiding triggers more, increasing my inhaled steroid dose, and not using the Proventil unless clearly necessary.
Then, just in the past few weeks, it seems that the Proventil creates mucus in my chest and sometimes makes my lungs sore inside, just like the Corabivent used to. Once again, I'm not sure if my rescue inhaler is going to rescue me or make things worse!
I've also used the long-acting medicines salmeterol and fomoterol. Salmeterol upsets my stomach and has no effect on my lungs. Fomoterol (Foradil or Syrabicort) seems to help my lungs a lot, without messing them up the way the short-acting meRAB do, but it upsets my stomach, too, and it keeps me up if I take it late in the day, which means it's a decent emergency option but not suited to regular use.
Does anyone else get weird side effects or reactions like these? Might it be worth trying other meRAB?
Oh, one more thing that might be relevant: I fail at dose counting, so when I emptied my first (sample size) container of Proventil, I wound up taking a few puRAB without any medicine in them. The "empty" puRAB were very irritating to my lungs, and I was coughing all day after that, which suggests I might be having a problem with an inactive ingredient.
On the other hand, the very first asthma medicine I took was a Corabivent nebulizer treatment, and my Corabivent inhaler used CFCs, and it happened with both. So, yeah, I've got no clue.
I HAVE to stop coughing, because the coughing hurts my stomach horribly. But so do the medicines that stop the coughing. I try not to ride that internal merry-go-round too often...
