Sticking w/ Verizon, Recommendations?

Wel, after much debate between Sprint or Verizon, I think I've decided we will stick with Verizon. I need suggestions for two phones, one for me and one for my dad.

My dad has very basic needs, make sure it makes and receives calls. All he really does with the phone is call home everyday and tells us he's coming home from work. We also take it with us when we go anywhere. I'd like to get him something simple, but can stand two years of light use.

Me, on the other hand, will be getting my first cell phone. I am a very avid tech user/geek. I would like to tether my phone and use it as a modem when possible. I need a camera for sure and would like bluetooth but it is not a necessity. I've been looking at the Motorola E815 and really, really like it. Yet we do not have EV-DO coverage in our area. Would VCast still work in a 1x area? Would it be easier to get a 1x only phone if I want to tether it?

Thanks everyone!

V-Cast is EV-DO only. For tethering, you don't want EV-DO as Verizon prohibits it. I guess if you don't have EV-DO in your area anyway, it doesn't matter. Cameras on most phones aren't very good compared to a standalone camera. The E815 is pretty good if you want something beyond basic. It has great reception so it could be a good option for your dad too.

too bad, at 14 i had a v60i, and my addiction went from there once i went gsm i never looked back! at 15 and 16 i was droppin 300 on phones no problem, now at 18 i drop 600 at the tip of a hat

I am just like you, looking at the e815 and vx9800. At the moment i am leaning towards the e815 for a solid all around phone. The vx9800 looks good, looks fun, but i dont type that often. Only good the vx9800 really has for me is the ability to view web pages. The rest is seems both phones are pretty squared off. If you are into hacking the phone the e815 already has an established community so finding help with seem edits wont be a problem.
