Steve Irwin question...the crocodile hunter?

I remember on the remembering Steve Irwin thing in ABC after he died, either he or his wife or the commentator said that Steve lived everyday as if it could be the last. They said he did that as a result of losing multiple people rather close to each other. I know his mom died in a car wreck, but I remember at least 1 if not 2 other poeple dying that were close to him, which made him realize how things could change very quickly. Does anyone know who else died, and when???
I have googled the heck out of it, and wickipedia was no hlep. I may need to find the entire show again and watch. Anybody...help?
