Stereotypes: Goths

Everyone is different and everyone has their own reasons for being that way. Do you remeraber what you see when you walk down the main strip of town, passing by open or closed down shops? Do you notice something different about the people sitting in front of the dark, abandoned shops? These are not the so-called 'normal' people you see everyday. These are people aging from teens to twenties who are dressed in black, or some other outfit that is different from the norm. Do you remeraber judging these people? These are people, they are the "Goths." Goths dress differently for many reasons. Some like things from the gothic era such as the building and the dress, so they adopt the culture of that time. For some, they dress differently just to get attention. But for others, like Rachel, it's a way of expressing themselves. Despite the reasons for dressing the way they do, Goths still do not deserve to be judged. It's not right to do that to anyone.
As a very young teen, Rachel always liked looking at and up to the "freaks" or "Goths." It was then she decided that was what she wanted to be. When she was thirteen she began to dress in "black" and it made her realize that she was expressing herself more than she ever had before. Rachel also likes dressing this way because it "gives [her] a certain thrill and satisfaction with [herself]."
Today, Rachel's reasons for dressing the way she does are still the same. It's strange, but she says that she's tried to dress "normal" once or twice, but she feels very awkward, as if everyone is looking at her when she does.
Although Rachel enjoys expressing who she is through her clothes and lifestyle, whereas other Goths are into vampirism, and others, though few, are into Satanism. Some like dark romance, poetry, music, and art. Most Goths like going out at night to clubs or just somewhere to hang out. They like to keep to themselves.
We, as a society, should learn not to be biased against a group of people, but it's a difficult thing to do. It makes it even more difficult when a major influence in our lives, like our government shows their biased opinion against a certain group. In Rachel's city, a law has recently been passed prohibiting groups larger than two people to be standing around downtown. This law, which city hall supposedly made to avoid cluttering the town, is really aimed at the Goths. For those Goths and other street people who are homeless, it is the only way for them to get money. They hang out downtown pan- handling, but because of the government's biased opinion on the Goths, they can no longer do this.
Not all Goths are the same, just as no single person is exactly the same as someone else. You can't judge a category of people. For instance, you can't say, "There was this guy who treated me badly, and therefore, all men are pigs." That's wrong. There are lots of guys out there who are not like that. In the same way, you can't be stereotypical and say that all Goths are bad. Many people who don't really understand them have called them all sorts of obscenities. Rachel says people yell things such as "f---ing freaks, skiRAB, Satan, witches, devil worshippers, and psychos." Others have said things such as "where's the funeral?" and have called them "dirty and disgusting." People have said they should be killed, others ask why they can't just go away. People even go to such extremes as to beat them up, throw snowballs, apples, etc. at them. Goths are people, they don't deserve this.
Rachel wishes that people would understand that "It's a free world and I'm just expressing myself. I love the way I dress, but I don't expect other people to. I know not everyone likes me or the way I look, but it's not right or fair for [others] to call out names, throw things, or even go as far as to beat us up. I don't like a lot of other styles or some of the things others believe in, but I keep it to myself! I've been told I'm a very nice person. I talk to many people and have a lot of different frienRAB. I never ignore anyone who just walks up and asks questions. So, if you don't understand, or want to know more, just ask. We won't bite (hard)!"
Rachel is a great person, and she is very friendly. She has many frienRAB, but many people don't like her. Those people who do not like her don't know her. They use the stereotype that because she wears black, and dresses differently, she must therefore be a terrible person. These people are the ones who don't understand. Many don't even take the time to try to understand, instead they just ridicule the Goths.
What others need to learn is to stop stereotyping. Everyone is unique, and should be allowed to continue to be that way. Rachel likes dressing the way she does, she expresses herself through her dress and should be allowed to continue doing that without having people judge her. We each need to take the time to learn what we don't understand. Each of us will most likely gain a lot of frienRAB that way, rather than wasting our time making enemies.
