Stereo questions...turntable, speakers, amp?

I know nothing about stereos. And I inherited tonnes of LPs and a turntable. The turntable is really good quality. I also have some bookshelf Speakers sitting around. I right now just play music on my computer with $100 speakers, so I don't know about real stereos. What else do I need to play the LPs, just an amp? Does the power of the amp, have to match the speakers and / or turntable. And what is a good inexpensive amp, keeping in mind I need minimal power, as I live in an apartment building and can't blast the music. But the sound quality is what I am looking for.
