I bought a 98 jetta a few months ago. The only problem was the stereo didn't work, but my dad said he would buy me a new one at christmas. Although I'd rather not wait till christmas haha 
So if I put a CD in, you can hear the stereo changing the tracks and playing/pausing but you can't hear any music. But you can hear white noise from the speakers. The volume is all the way up, no noise comes out. Will a new stereo fix it? (We took the stereo out to see if the wires were wrong, but we couldn't tell because it's a German car. We realized the stereo was $3.30 at best buy haha, maybe that's the problem.)
it's not factory, but that is probably what happened because I looked up the current stereo and it is older than the car haha.
