I was at Safeway and i was shopping around. I brought a a couple of stuff and i walked out the store with one bag. I came back to the store later and went to look for more stuff. I took two potato and carried it in a bag. I walked around for 5 minutes and got one soda. Then i put the bag of potato in the bag where i paid for. Then i paid for the soda. I think the camera saw me put the bag of potato in my bag. If they some how found me, they dont have like 100% proof of me taking it right? The camera aren't everywhere, so they don't have proof if i brought it or not. It was less then $5. What can i face if i am caught?

You got away! Just don't go back to the store anytime soon just in case there was a camera. Usually cameras arent everywhere. Good luck!

Although you could be charged with shoplifting, their case is rather thin. The fact you put it with paid for merchandise is proof enough and they could have nabbed you even before you approach the registers. If they saw you, they may recognize you the next time you visit and they will keep a closer eye on you. You are probably home free on the previous stealing spree.

You got out of the store and home without getting caught I assume... so you really cannot be "caught" for this particular incident. You can face additional scrutiny if the security cameras did catch you and someone figures out who you are. You might find employees paying extra attention to you when you're in there next. If/ when you do get caught, you face shoplifting charges. Typically those amount to some small fines and maybe community service.
**And I wouldn't worry about what Paste said. He/she is full of it.

I'm sorry, but you could face up to twelve years in prison for robbery. As a federal judge I want you to know that stealing is a very serious crime and as part of a new set of laws put into action last month by the President, seemingly minor offenses can score you six to twelve years in a high security detention facility. Just because they don't have proof doesn't mean that you aren't going to get what you deserve. I'll take this as a confession, I've laid an IP trace on your address and am issuing an arrest warrant right now.
