State of Georgia Divorce - Different circumstances..?

A friend of mine has had a bit of a hard time.
She has 4 children, all of the same father, however things aren't so good.
She has been married to the father for 10/11 years (first child was born a short time before the marriage) and it has been horrible the entire time.
During the marriage she has been the sole parent, and he has never put any effort in, at one time she was holding 2 jobs while looking after the children and paying all the bills while the father stayed at home, mostly under the influence of drugs. He has beaten her, yelled at her and the children, and when they were younger he often slapped them round the head. He has raped her numerous times, one time knocking her out to the point of nearly dying, and her mother has even witnessed it.
Recently they have separated and she has been trying to get custody of the kids. When they were first married he had promised to her that she would get custody if they ever had issues, however it wasn't in writing, therefore he has decided to go against it. Due to the fact he lives closer to the school they spend the week with him and weekends and holidays with her, however many times he has kept them for the weekend and some holidays without giving her a say in the matter.
Many times he has been 'on his way' to collect them on Sunday night for them to go to school the next day and has left it to times such as 12.30, meaning the children either had to stay up or have to be woken up for the hour journey.
The scenario is entirely unfair as she is an amazing mother and he is the worst father I have ever known. She has divorce papers however he has refused to sign them, he has told her that he is dealing prescription drugs however she has no proof of this, he has filmed raping her and shown her the video however she has not been able to find it, and sadly all of the things he has done she has no way to prove them. She hasn't got the money for court as he will not give up his rights.

Basically, my question is, what options does this woman have? What can she do to stop what she and the children have to go through?

Sorry for the jumble this question is, it's just I don't know how else to word it. Thank you for reading through it.
