Starting out on a Stationary Bike?

Hi,

Before buying a $1000 road bike, I'm thinking about starting out on a stationary bike for a couple months. Just a couple days ago, I biked for 12 miles at a pace of 10 miles every 33 minutes (18.3 mph I think) with level 8 (no idea what that means).

My goal is to complete Ironman August 2011 and I am hoping to amp my mileage up 'slowly' to about 150 miles by August 2011. Is this something feasible?

Background: I'm a runner and I'm also trying to qualify for Boston via the Richmond marathon this year.

Questions:

1. How do I know if Level 8/18.3mph/12 miles to start is a 'good' start?
2. How do you translate the stationary bike endurance effort to a road bike? So when I go buy the road bike, I know what I'm doing?
3. How do I use the stationary bike and build a great program to help me elevate my endurance efforts on this bike? I feel like once I can hit the 50 mile mark on the stationary bike, I'll have enough endurance to handle a road bike. Thoughts?

Thanks!
