starting an oil painting?

okay so i have painted the base of the canvas for the purpose of priming. i want to then draw my portrait in a pencil maybe? or charcoal, which one would be best, then i want to spray it with fixative. then paint over it. Ive seen people do this technique but what does it exactly do. im think that it just lets the person see where the highlights and shadows are
