Starter problems on F-150 Ford P/U?

1993 E-150 standard shift 300 six cylinder Starter works fine until i bolt it up to the Engine -- Then the starter gear fails to extend and engage the flywheel . When the truck is roll started and the engine is running --the starter gear will extend out and try to engage the flywheel
