I'm a freshman right now and in my 2nd quarter for the year - going on to the 3rd quarter next month. Right now, I just had my midterms and did very poorly on it. During my 1st quarter, I did poorly as well. I recently went to my advisor and talked to her about time management and decided to drop a couple of high-leveled classes since I'm so overworked. I also work part-time in order to pay the university. Things have been really hectic.Right now, my GPA stands at 2.5 (1st quarter GPA, 2nd quarter is not done yet - though, I have a feeling this GPA will be low as well). And if I get all A's starting my 3rd quarter and all through my uni years, will my chances of going into pre medical/dentistry still be within reach?I understand about MCAT and DAT tests along with other "fun" req's.Oh, I don't know if this counts, but the classes that I've pretty much bombed were electives. I passed my science courses with flying colors. I have yet to take math. It's palentology/art history that I did not do so well on. Agsg. D:

Yeah, but your chances of going to a GOOD, RESPECTABLE pre med/dentistry program are pretty much shot as these are super competitive programs.

Ir's ok. One quarter, even one year, of mediocre grades will be overlooked by admission committees as long as you turn it around. Chalk it up to misadjustment and learn your lesson and don't let it happen again. and you should be alright. Make sure your science teachers remember you as the hardest working student in the class since you will need their reco's later.

All is not lost yet. If you can bring your GPA up from this point forward, you may still have a chance. You don't need all As from this point forward, but if you can bring your GPA for every future term up into the med school range - I'd say, at least a 3.5 for each term (not necessarily overall, although that'd help - but in each term, no lower than a 3.5) - then you would stand a shot at med or dental school if your MCAT or DAT test was strong enough. You need to show significant improvement from this point forward. One good thing is that you got your bad grades early. You can easily show that those are behind you by doing very well from next term on. Do additional things to make your application very strong. Science appears to be your strength, anyway, so take additional, advanced level science classes, and do well in them - do beyond the typical med school pre-reqs. Do the physician shadowing. Do health-related volunteer work. Get involved in professor research, if you can. When you are picking electives, try to pick those that play, as best you can, to your strengths. For example, if you have to take an English elective, and you're really into science, maybe see if your uni offers technical writing, and take that instead of comparative literature, etc.
