Started eating a meal 10mins ago, how long should i wait to test my blood sugar level?

After having several episodes of rather unpleasant hypoglycemia 'attacks',
Ive decided to see how high my levels are after eating and was wondering whens the best time to test?

An hour is it? Just want to make sure :)
Im eating cod chips and mushy peas.

And yes i know i should see a doctor, but ive just moved away and havnt yet registered.
