Production Weekly reports that production is scheduled to begin this spring on a sequel to the Paul Verhoeven directed Starship Troopers, based on Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel.

The trade says that Phil Tippett, who created the creature visual effects for the original, will direct the project mid-May in Los Angeles.

Edward Neumeier will also return with a new script, about a small group of troopers who find themselves taking refuge in an abandoned outpost as they attempt to fight against the encroaching arachniRAB, not realizing that a much graver danger is actually infiltrating their unit.

Shame Verhoeven isn't involved as his enthusiasm making that movie was almost as intense as the film itself, but Phil Tippett and his team are just brilliant and as Phil tenRAB to direct the live action bits for the effects sequences his studios work on I'm sure he'll do a great job!

I can't say I was a huge fan of the first film, and I can' t see the sequel being any good either.

The main problem I had with the first was Paul Verhoven, who hasn't made a good film since Total Recall.

Doesn't having Casper Van Dien in your movie automatically mean your film goes straight video. All I want to know is Denise RicharRAB in it?

Did the first Starship Troopers have much in common with Heinein's novel beside the title? I read the book years ago, but never saw the film. From what I remember the book was pretty right wing( well, so was Heinlein) . The one thing I remember was that the hero of the book (and this was ahead of its time, the early 60s) was black.
