You took the words right out of my mouth. Adult STAR WARS fans are just like adult fans of superhero comics (Marvel and DC superhero comics). Their tastes have changed as they grew up and the stuff that appealed to them as kids, no longer appeals to them as adults.
What many STAR WARS fans (like many fans of Marvel and DC superhero comics) either do not understand or refuse to admit, is that STAR WARS (a) is NOT high art (b) is NOT HARDCORE or TRUE science fiction (it's science fantasy) and (c) was always (and still is) intended for kids and people of ALL AGES.
A major reason why STAR WARS is a much more popular and financially successful franchise then STAR TREK is because SW has continued to be marketed towards kids/all ages since it debuted, while ST has MAINLY (if not, EXCLUSIVELY) been marketed towards the die hard shrinking and aging (and dying) ST fan base over the last 40 years.
OMT, I enjoyed the CLONE WARS movie. I thought it was a great "check your brain at the door" action/adventure movie.
