Sprocket sizes on my bike?

so i took my 05 kawi 636 to get a new chain and sprocket kits installed.... i was thinking of putting a stock one on but i asked the mechanic if he recommended changing the sprocket sizes and he said I should get one tooth down on the front sprocket and leave the back one stock.... will that give me enough power gain and not mess with my speedo????....what will it do?? thanks
