sprinting and squatting/leg workout?

Alright so I've heard so many different opinions from so many different people about whether exercises like squats, lunges, and step ups(with weights of course) helps sprinting times. I'm a 400/800 runner. so im a sprinter/mid distance runner and I was wondering would squats improve my times? and other leg workouts like lunges & step ups? i already do upper body but wanted to add lower body on some days, but outside of all I've heard i know that Olympic sprinters like Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis, and maurice greene all were reallye explosive and at once the fastest men on earth, but then again usain bolt does not do as much weight work and he is the current fastest man on earth...so please give me some insight on if leg workouts would help and if yes explain why and how come some sprinters/runners dont do it then?
