Sprint upgrade and mail-in-rebate?

so i am eligible for a $150 upgrade from a nextel to a sprint phone. I was trying to get the LG lx 290 and when i tried to upgrade on line everything said it was free but then i clicked to the next page and it said 50 mail-in-rebate charge...y/? i thought it was free so why do i have to pay $50? i dont have money to send them and xtra 50..what can i do?
 
If you have been a customer for awhile call and ask them if you renew your contract for 2 years are there any discounts? I have been a customer with Nextel a few years. I wanted a new phone but didn't want to pay either. I was given a 50 buck credit for renewing the contract. Still had the 150 credit to use on a new phone. Plus got the rebate too! I only had to pay 70.00 for the phone I wanted!
