Sprint HTC Hero tether WiFi ?

can anyone help me in how to make my sprint htc hero as a hotspot for my PS3 and Laptop..... i heard you need to root the phone but don't know exactly what that is.....can u also jailbreak the phone and whats the point of jail breaking the Hero????? right now i have the Pdanet app which sucks cuz i have to use the usb canle to tether my pc......
