Sprint 2-yr contract. how many months do i have to wait before i can upgrade my phone?

my sprint phone is starting to have some problems. i have a 2 year contract and it's been about 14months now
i heard that we dont have to wait for 24months to upgrade the phone but just 18months
is it true? how long more do i have to wait before i can upgrade it? thanks!
