Spot on lungs found prepping for bypass surgery?

Today my father in law went in for a heart cath and found that he has 4 blockages..97%, two at 87% and 60%..he needs quadruple bypass surgery.
They started the full body scans and testing to get him ready for surgery in a few days and a small spot was found on his lungs.
He has been a smoker on and off for about 30 years. He is 56 years old and other than what has happened today he has always been very active and seemed in pretty good shape. The doctors aren't sure what the spot on his lung is so they are going to do a ct scan and biopsy tomorrow.
Will they find out tomorrow if its cancer? Is there any other possibility other than cancer when a spot is found on the lungs. It is only one spot on one lung.
We are so scared and everything has just gotten worse and worse. What if it is cancer, what is the success rate of survival if it is one spot on one lung and praying thats the only spot they find.
The doctors say they want to take care of his lung before they do bypass surgery.
