I'm looking for some professional opinions on my health situation. My family has spent 16 years involved in auto racing. I was the driver of the car on the dirt track around the midwest. I suffered a herniated disc in my lower back (L5 disc) in the fall of 2007. It happened bending over to get something from the bathroom vanity (not a racing related injury). I ended up having back surgery to remove the fragments and clean up the disc so it could heal. My back has continued to improve over the past two years. I've lost 55 lbs since my surgery and have become more physcially active with daily walks. My back feels great and I'm thinking about getting back into racing again. I'm looking into the best safety equipment money can buy and adding extra padding to the lower region of the seat.
Obviously, driving a race car would not be something that doctors would encourage. I personally find driving a race car safer than riding a motorcycle or playing football. I'm wanting to know if there is anyone out there that has had a similar situation and what the results were after returning to sports after surgery. I'm wanting to know if there are any doctors out there that have treated patients for similar back issues and if they were fine returning to their sports activities. I need to make a decision quickly and I'm on the fence about the "what if's" of my decision. But living by the "what if's" can also take most of the fun out of life.
Thank you!
