Sport Bike Inspection when buying Second Hand?

I am about to inspect a couple of sport bikes and would like to know how to listen for dings and bells when the seller's motorcycle's engine is turned on and/or revved. A seasoned rider/mechanic will know the problems and will automatically hear which part has the problem. I will be looking at a 1993 Kawasaki Ninja 400cc and a 1990 Honda CBR 400cc. Thanks!
 
Well you want to listen for bearing knock-something you can hear sounds like a bunch of ground up marbles going round right after a cold start. you want to look for smoke-on a sport bike will probably indicate broken valves. In general listen for and to any noise that does not seem natural-ie anything other than a smooth purr of the engine. Cause hey, they person wants to sell the bike, does it not make sense that they would neglect having "the only needs a valve adjustment" done before trying to sell it? If they did they are a fool and I would walk away because they probably have neglected quite a few other periodic maintenance items as well.
