spore game question.....pls help?

ok so at the beginning it was very easy to befriend other creatures by "singing" but now as i got further it's very hard nearly impossible to befriend a creature, so i can have a ally....i press the singing button but the pink bar doesn't go very high (you know whati'm talking about :P)
any tips?
am i doing something wrong ?
