I was learning in class today (linguistics) about split-brain patients, and how if they see something in their right visual field - like a pencil - they can say that they have seen it (because the signal from the right field transfers to the left hemisphere where language skills are located). But, if it's in the left visual field - like an apple - they are not able to say they have seen it. But, they may be able to spell or draw it out. I'm wondering, does this mean the patient is aware that they have seen apple but just can't name it because the signal goes to the right brain, or are they unaware what they have seen, but they can spell or draw it out? On some shows it seemed that their hand "knew" what it was, though they didn't. Any answers?
oh, and by spelling I mean with scrabble tiles. It would kind of defeat the purpose if they could spell it out loud.
