I'd say that the greatest disaster ever was a mass extinction 250 million years ago that wiped out over 90% of all life on the planet, which soon led the forerunners of the Crocodilians & Dinosaurs to replace the forerunners of the mammals as the dominant land animals. The event was likely caused by a super-volcanic eruption in Siberia that set off a chain reaction of a series of natural disasters that threw the planet's climate out of balance.
